Where (and Where Not) to Install Your Television
When watching a video, having the properly sized screen can make a huge difference. As in movie theaters, a screen is a proper size when it allows the eyes to scan
the screen instead of simply being fixed on the screen. Watching a 2-hour movie on a screen that is too small will cause the eyes to “stare” or stay fixed. This can often
cause fatigue and headaches. People who are staring at a computer screen all day know this; they are told to look off in the distance from time to time, refocusing the
eyes, and reducing fatigue.
In the same way the height of the picture in relation to the viewer is important. Assuming a proper healthy posture, the middle of the picture should be about 10% below
eye level. This reduces strain on the neck, and we all know about that.
Of course you can always slouch in your chair to achieve the proper angle or have a chair that allows you to find the proper angle. And that’s great if you are designing a
full-blown "home theater" but not if you are trying to integrate a home theater into a normal living room.
