Where (and Where Not) to Place Your Speakers
I’ve been in hundreds of homes where the speakers were placed up in the corners of a room. This is singularly the worst place to put a speaker
because the sound bounces off three walls before it gets to your ear, making it strident and tinny.
Studies have shown that women are more sensitive
to high frequencies and men have a preference for enhanced bass. Since most
systems aren't capable of reproducing bass accurately, men tend to boost
the volume to compensate much to the women's dismay. Ideally, speakers should
be positioned so that the sound travels unimpeded to the ear making for a
much warmer sound and eliminating the need to increase volume.
Speakers don't always get the best placement in a room; concessions for furniture and other aesthetics will prevail. Still, it is better to start with
the best position than the worst possible place.
