Choosing Good Speakers
The best speakers have what is called a flat-response, which means that they
try to reproduce sound as accurately as possible. There are a lot of manufacturers
that create a sweet sound in their speakers i.e., making certain frequencies
stand out so that they draw you into the sound psycho acoustically. You
may hear a pair of speakers in the store that jump out at you. In all my
years of experience they are not usually the best choice.
A speaker that
accents certain frequencies will tend to grate on you. It’s a little like
the “special secret sauce” designed by chemists to taste good. It might be
fine for a burger but now imagine it in your wine, on your Kobe steak and
in your Crème Brule.
A good speaker, because it is neutral, can make the cello savory the guitar solo spicy and the soprano bittersweet.
